The U.S Department of State announced on 19 August 2020 the suspension or termination of three bilateral agreements with Hong Kong, including the 1989 Hong Kong-U.S. tax exemption agreement on income from the international operation of ships, which is in response to actions by China's central government that are seen as eroding Hong Kong's autonomy.
