On April 28th, 2014, United Arab Emirates' Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, met with Uruguayan officials in Montevideo, including Uruguay’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luis Almagro Lemes. The officials discussed several areas of cooperation between the U.A.E. and Uruguay, including the signing of an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation. Such an agreement would be the first of its kind between the two countries. No date has yet been set for formal negotiations to begin.
