On 22 October 2024, the Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament) approved the draft law for the ratification of the pending income tax treaty with Malaysia that was signed on 17 May 2024. The treaty will enter into force once the ratification instruments are exchanged and will apply from 1 January of the year following its entry into force. Once in force and effective, the new treaty will replace the 1987 tax treaty between Malaysia and the former Soviet Union as it applies in relations between Malaysia and Russia.
