According to recent reports, Oman's tax authority has announced that the excise tax on goods seen as harmful to health will be extended to sweetened beverages with effect from October 2020. The excise tax was introduced in 2019 at rates of 100% and 50% on tobacco, carbonated drink, energy drinks, and special purpose goods including alcohol and pork products. The excise tax will be levied at a rate of 50% on ready to drink beverages sweetened with added sugar of any kind. 100% fruit juices and milk products containing at least 75% milk will be excluded.
