The government announced that transport operators will be subject to a flat tax (press release from the Ministry of Transport and Works from 11 July 2013). The flat tax would replace the payment of income tax, education tax, and National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and National Housing Trust (NHT) contributions. This is a result of an agreement between the government and Jamaica's public transport associations, which aims to further formalize the public transport sector, thus allowing transport operators to benefit from pension schemes and housing loans.
