On 29 January 2025, El Salvador's parliament approved amendments to the 2021 law that made Bitcoin legal currency in the country. Among other things, the amendments include the repeal of provisions allowing for the payment of taxes in Bitcoin. Further, the obligation for businesses to accept Bitcoin as payment is removed, which is now voluntary. The amendments were made as part of a deal to secure a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
