Bulgaria took over the EU Presidency from Estonia effective 1 January 2018. In general, Bulgaria plans to continue with the work of the 18-month Programme of the Council, which includes the Estonian, Bulgarian, and Austrian Presidencies. Bulgaria's Presidency has four priority areas, which include: The Future of Europe and the Young People – Economic Growth and Social Cohesion; European Perspective and Connectivity of the Western Balkans; Security and Stability in a Strong and United Europe; and Digital Economy and Skills needed for the Future.
