Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a joint statement following the XIV Brazil-Portugal Summit held on 19 February 2025. Among other things, the statement notes that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro have agreed to start negotiations to update the 1991 social security agreement between the two countries. The two leaders also reaffirmed their interest in updating the 2000 Brazil-Portugal income tax treaty. Any resulting updates to either agreement will need to be finalized, signed, and ratified before entering into force.
