Bhutan's Department of Revenue and Customs has issued a notification on the enactment of the Tax Act of Bhutan 2022 on 23 December 2022. The Act provides for the revision of the sales tax and customs duty rates on several commodities classified in the Bhutan Trade Classification and Tariff Schedule 2022. The purpose is to address inflationary pressure on essential food items and ensure adequate food supply and nutrition security, and to reduce consumption of harmful products that are damaging to health, the economy, and the environment. The Act is effective retroactively from 8 November 2022.
