A third round of negotiations will be held in October 2008 for a substantially new tax treaty between Germany and the United Arab Emirates. The present treaty was concluded for an initial period of 10 years, which expired on 1 January 2002. The German Ministry of Finance, however, calculated the 10-year period from 10 August 1996 (the date the treaty entered into force), and therefore the treaty would apply until 10 August 2006. In 2006, Germany and the United Arab Emirates agreed to extend the application of the treaty for a period of 2 years ending on 9 August 2008.
