On 11 June 2020, officials from Georgia and Japan met via video conference to begin negotiations for an income tax treaty. The treaty must be finalized, signed, and ratified before entering into force and, once in force and effective, will replace the 1987 tax treaty between Japan and the former Soviet Union as it applies in respect of relations between Georgia and Japan.
