On 1 July 2024, Hungary took over the EU Council Presidency from the Belgian presidency. According to the Programme of the Hungarian Presidency, the priorities during the six-month presidency include: A New European Competitiveness Deal; The Reinforcement of European Defence Policy; A Consistent and Merit-Based Enlargement Policy; Stemming Illegal Migration; Shaping the Future of Cohesion Policy; A Farmer-Centered EU Agricultural Policy; and Addressing Demographic Challenges.
