On 19 May 2025, the Italian Council of Ministers approved the ratification of the pending protocol to the 2020 agreement with Switzerland regarding cross-border commuters (frontier workers), which was signed on 30 May 2024. The protocol will enter into force once the ratification instruments are exchanged and, once in force, will replace a temporary agreement signed in 2023 that allows cross-border commuters to work from home (telework) for up to 25% of their working time without this entailing any change in their status as a cross-border commuter within the meaning of the 2020 agreement.
